Weather and transport

If you ask me to define weather on the Adriatic sea enough is the word ”Unpredictable”. The entire eastern side of the Adriatic is abundant with special local conditions and events. Before we begin to talk about winds, we need to know the wind rose. The wind of the Adriatic is composed of the jugo (south-east wind), bura (north eastern wind), maestral (northwest wind), široko (south wind), tramuntana (north wind), levant (eastern wind).

Bura is a cold wind that comes vertically down from the mountain.

Usually it lasts for three days, it brings a clear weather but if it brings cloudy and rainy weather then it lasts seven days. Bura blows in gusts so it's normal that at one point the speed of wind is 0kn and next second 40kn. Bura is the most dangerous wind for sailing.

In the northern and middle Adriatic, average bura is 40-90kn, in the Velebit channel can reach record 130 knots.

Jugo brings warm weather and rain. Jugo is blowing from the open sea and creates large waves but has a constant wind speed and sailing is much easier than on bora. It lasts longer than bura especially in winter.

Maestral is the best wind for sailing on Adriatic. It is a thermal wind that start about 10 o'clock in the morning and it rises till afternoon and on sunset stops blowing.

Nevera is a local storm that can be most commonly encountered in summer perIods. Even for the most beautiful sunny day without a single cloud, it is possible in twenty minutes to have nevera with a fierce and very dangerous wind turbulence rain and thunder. The only positive thing is that it lasts for a short time.

Due to unpredictable local weather conditions, it is very important to keep track of the weather situation and plan several shelters depending on wind directions.
